Tiveden; Fairy tales and Trolls

Tiveden, the southernmost wilderness of Sweden, has become accessible thanks to several beautiful hiking trails.

The hilly and wild forest landscape, with deep ravines, magical forest lakes, impressive glacial boulders at Stenkälla, the view from Trollkyrkoberget, and the unique beach at Vitsand make Tiveden one of the most special, unique, and worth visiting areas in the country.

In Tiveden's National Park, the forest is allowed to develop into a primeval forest; untouched forest land.

Inspired by this uninhabited area, many legends have arisen about alleged inhabitants, which explains the name "Trolltiven." Various legends tell of the red color of the water lilies in Lake Fagertärn and about Junker Jägare and his ill-fated love for a girl from the region.

Wolves have their own habitat in the Vargavidderna nature reserve. Two hiking trails offer the opportunity to explore their surroundings. Juarbergen, Utnäset, Harge Uddar, Djäknesundet, and many other beautiful nature reserves also offer lovely excursions.

Nearby

Tivedstorp is an old Finnish village with period buildings. Romantic and authentic.

The coffee house offers a cozy break for a cup of coffee. The same applies to the Bakstugan, which bakes bread in the wood-fired oven and serves homemade dishes. Both are within cycling distance from the campsite. A similar small village is Sannerud, where you will find a charming shop, the so-called Tiveds Lanthandel, famous for its hand-smoked Tivedsskinka (ham) and bacon, as well as local products. Here you will also find the famous summer restaurant Luripompa.

At the back of Tivedschool, a hiking trail called 'Konst-i-Ring' begins, with a changing exhibition of local art. Jeanette’s workshop 'Häggeboda Glaskonst' is also only 1 km away from the campsite.

A short drive away are the larger towns of Askersund, Laxå, and Karlsborg, where you can find (food) shops, restaurants, workshops, a train station, open-air museums, theaters, etc.

Kullängsstugan is a wooden house from 1693. It is a good example of a farmhouse for a prosperous farmer from that time. The house is still in very good condition and impressive with its thick hand-carved wooden beams.

Olshammar is known for the Birgitta Church and the home of Werner von Heidenstam (1859), the current Olshammarsgården. He was a very well-known swedish poet and writer of the time.

Göta Kanal

Karlsborg is located to the south, by Lake Vättern and the mouth of the Göta Kanal. A massive military fortress, which was intended to function as a reserve capital during wartime, offers adventurous tours. There are various cruises along the Göta Canal in the summer to Vänern. Halfway along is the Forsvik Industrial Museum and Norrkvarn, where a miniature Göta Canal can be seen, which is fun for children. Along the canal, there is also a lovely bike path.

Örebro

The capital of the province, Örebro, was originally a medieval village where the provincial meetings were held. The old wooden buildings that have been preserved are located in Wadköping; a very pleasant tourist destination and open-air museum in the center of Örebro.

In the 13th century, the king had a fortress built, which stands at the same location as the mighty Örebro Castle today.

Just outside the city, you will find the Marieberg Galleria shopping center.
